Who makes a better Weaver scope mount?

Weaver scope
17hunter asked:

I have a Remington 597 .17 hmr. It has a groove on the receiver, which I am currently using since the Simmons Weaver base I am using will not tighten down. I don't think Loc Tite on the ***** will work until the screws can be snugged down.

The screws will ***** into the holes tightly by themselves, but they will not snug up with the Weaver base made by Simmons. Maybe the screws that came with the base are just a little too short. any suggestion?

The Tip Off groove on your rifles receiver will work, but then you have to make sure whatever rings you use clamp pretty tightly into that groove so they don’t move and throw off your scope.

As a Gunsmith I would suggest you replace your scope base with an actual “Weaver Base” made by Weaver and not the Simmons “Copy” of the Weaver you have now. Simmons scope base screws are shorter in length (You have already picked up on that) and the Weaver Base and screws are perfect length for your Remington 597. You can get an “Original” Weaver Base from the below listed website for about $7
Remember, Tip Off Scope bases were designed originally for 22 caliber rifles and weren’t really designed as a solid base for a .17HMR Rifle….
