New With Scope Mounts Is Weaver Mount and Dovetail the Same?
By spotter ~ February 23rd, 2009. Filed under: Weaver Rifle Scopes.
I have a 17HMR and need 1" scope mounting rings. The base to mount the rings is on the rifle. The book says they are "Weaver" style. I'm seeing alot of dovetail mounts offered. Some with Weaver/Dovetail. Are they one and the same? My base has a groove through the middle - I assume the mount ***** goes through that groove. Looking at B-Square rings. Any input would be GREAT! Thank You!

No they are not the same and are not interchangeable. Stick with the Weaver styles and you will be fine. I’ve tried several brands over the years and I like the Burris rings with the nylon bushings inside. Sorry I can’t remember what they are called.
Back to the two types – Dovetail rings mount by being set sideways and then turned 90 degrees to line up. Weaver style mount like you were saying – with a ***** running across the middle.

NO..They are not the same. The Dove tail base is the 3/8″ raised rib going down the middle of your scope base. “Dove tail ” rings clamp onto this small rib. (Dovetail rings are usually used on .22 rifles)Regular “Weaver Style Rings” including B-Square clamp to the “Outside” beveled edge of your scope base and are much more sturdy than “smaller “Dovetail” rings. The horizontal grooves you describe are for the clamping screws to hold the rings in place. Just ignore the “Dovetail Ring” info and buy any Weaver Style 1″ diameter rings you wish. They will all fit your scope base regardless of who makes them.. I hope this isn’t confusing you.
