Mil-Dot Reticles

By spotter ~ December 29th, 2008. Filed under: Riflescope Questions and Answers.

About 4 weeks ago, I was at my local rifle range watching a guy absolutely nail a target with a 17 hmr at ranges from 50 yards out to 150 yards.  I that isn't really a long way as compared to a centerfire rifle range, but it was impressive nonetheless.  This guy was getting some really nice groups as I happened to be downrange during a safe period and took a quick glance at one of his targets.

We struck up a conversation about shooting and got into gear.  Turns out he was shooting a Savage 93 series in 17 HMR topped with a Mueller Tac-Pro 4 X 12 scope.  He let me look at the set-up and I noticed that he was using a mil-dot reticle.  We talked a little about reticles and he absolutely swore by the mil-dot for a variety of reasons.

Well, about 2 weeks ago, I picked up a nice little used Mueller 4 X 12 with a mil-dot thinking I might give it a try.  I got back from the range yesterday and have officially decided that a mil-dot reticle is not for me.  I definitely do better with just a simple crosshairs or dot. All the various dot settings is just too busy for me and my simple mind.  Having to constantly think if I was using the right dot for 50 yards versus 100 yards was just not worth the trouble.

For those of you that shoot mil-dot's, you have my utmost respect.
