Which Rifle Scope would you recommend?

I am trying to pick out a scope for my Savage Arms MKII. It is a 22LR that I use mostly for plinking, but would like to try and do some semi accurate target shooting at maybe fifty yards and up (I'm pretty Novice). Now I have narrowed it down to a BSA 4-16x40 Illuminated Mil-Dot Riflescope or a Simmons 3-9x32 22 Mag rifle scope. Is the 4-16 too much power? The deal I found was half price for the BSA so they are both in the 50-60 dollar range. Any other suggestions?

I think you’ll be a lot happier with the 3-9x. All that can be said of the illuminated reticle for your purposes is that it gives you a chance to run out of batteries, and stretching for extra magnification, and extra magnification range, almost always results in less clarity, except for some very, very expensive top-end scopes. Also, the lower magnification will get you on target quicker when plinking, with the wider field of vision.

Take a good look at eBay. If you are in the market for cheap scopes, you can often find a decent used scope for a fraction of what they would cost new.
