They are both great scopes, I think you would be happy with either, but I personally would go with the leupold, they also have a good warrenty.

They are both fine scopes —– I only use the Nikons — Not because they are better or greater but because I got one as a gift and the other I got a deal on… I am very happy with them and would recommend them to anyone….. Why is the leupold more expensive? I have no idea — I have looked thru both scopes with comparable specs and the optics in both are about the same… See the below link for Nikon scopes and a cool video…….

I have the former on a 270 and the latter on a 7mm. Optics seem to be of a quality commensurate with price, but Leupold has been specifically making rifle scopes longer and seems to have the balance a bit better, and seems a bit sturdier if you’re going to use it heavily. After using them for many years, though, I found neither is the best choice in that caliber class, and I’ve become a big fan of the Leupold VariX II in 2-7x, with the 3-9x more suitable for miniatures like the quarter bores and 6mm’s.

The Leupold is worth the extra asking price.*

Nikon has always made good cameras and binoculars and their scopes seem to be a great deal better these days than they were at first. Leupold, however has been in the business of making scopes for more years than I’ve been around. I have three Leupolds. I have a Vari XII 2.5-10 on my .25-06 and I use it more than my Nikon binoculars. I’ve got Vari-XII 3×9’s on my .243 and my .30-06. I have never had a problem with any of these scopes and they have excellent warranties. I think Nikon will come along soon, but you can’t beat tradition and experience when it comes to trusting your optics. Leupold is worth the extra few dollars.

I have had my Remington 700 Mountain Rifle 30-06 for over 20 years, my husband bought me a new Browning last year for Christmas and I still used my tried and true Remington this past season. I originally had an inexpensive Tasco scope that did a good enough job, but I saved up and bought a Leupold 3-9x 40mm a few years back. It was more expensive than most of the others (barring Zeiss of course), but it has turned out to be a fabulous choice. Crystal clear optics, easy to sight in and very forgiving of any bumps, shakes and rattles that would normally throw a scope off range. Spend the extra money, you will not regret it and you will also have a great scope that will last for generations.

I would be very happy with either ,but might lean toward the Leupold for all the reasons others mention & the extra cost was not a problem.
Best endorsement would be that Leupold is used by US snipers.

Leupold. Made in the USA by American workers. Warranty is second to none. Always reliable. I sent a 1955 Leupold Pioneer back to the factory for recharge of the nitrogen inside the scope. It cost me only the shipping one way and the scope is resealed with new seals, charged with nitrogen and better than ever. It will now last at least another 55+ years…Longer than me. Thanks Leupold you are the best. That is why I own 150 products of theirs. Nikon is Japanese!!!
