Which Nikon Scope?
By spotter ~ January 7th, 2009. Filed under: Nikon Scopes.
Can't decide between the Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14X40 which I can afford right now, or should I save a little more and pay the extra $100 for the Monarch 4-16X42? Is it that much better? It will go on a Savage 12BVSS .223.
Thank you,
I'm sorry I forgot to mention that this will be a varmint setup, shooting small game and targets out to 400yrds.

Are you sure you need that much magnification? I would think that a 3-9×40 would be fine for anything a .223 would be shooting at; but of the two, I can’t see paying $100 more for an essential upgrade from 40mm to 42mm on the exit.
My 1st recommendation would be the Prostaff series in 3-9×40, then the Buckmaster.

The Monarch is a GREAT scope.
I would opt for the monarch as it will have better resale, you can easily swap it to another rifle in the future and its just an all around better scope.
Are you really sure you want that much magnification though? That really is quite powerful.
Seems you would want that on a 7 mm or something along those lines with that much power.

Save some more money. Ignore the Japanese Nikon and buy a real scope…. Get a USA made Leupold VX-II 6 x 18 with the Varmint style recticle.
