What do you think of the Nikon Monarch 8420 Rifle Scope?
By spotter ~ January 8th, 2009. Filed under: Nikon Scopes.
I like to go target shooting and try to shoot stuff as far away as possible.. 1000 yards but I also am getting into hunting, so I will be going deer hunting to. I am looking at the Nikon Monarch 8420 for my remington 700 30-06 and my budget is $400. What do you think of that scope? Would you recommend something different. Thanks for your input. heres a website about the scope.

Looks like a fine piece of glass. You can use it at 3x for hunting and 12x for longer ranges. At 12x the target will appear tobe 83 yards away.

My top choice of scope brands is Leupold.
I own a Nikon variable power scope, and when I turn up the magnification, the crosshairs become fuzzy (out of focus). If I try to refocus the crosshairs, the image I am aiming at becomes out of focus. I have never had such problems with Leupold.
As far as shooing 1,000 yards, I am curious to know where you live that have ranges that are that long. I live fairly close to a rifle range with a 300 yard range and THAT is far.

You’ll never go wrong with a Nikon. The monarch has outstanding optics. After going through several cheaper scopes, I put a 4.5-14 buckmaster on my .338 mag. It’s got the multi post reticle for different ranges. It’s spot on out to 500 yards, I’ve checked. I love the scope, and it’s a whole lot less expensive than my bushnell 4200 and leupold vxIII. They have their places too, but I think that for the money, Nikon is a tough brand to beat. The only complaint that I have is that the finish on the scope isn’t that durable; it scratches very easily. The Bushnell Elite and Leupold vxIII’s are very nice scopes also. I’ve got a Bushnell Elite 8-32 on my 204 ruger target rifle (its a remington xr100) and a 1.75-6 vxIII on my cz 416 rigby. The bushnell has proven to be a good scope on that target rifle. I like the optics and the eye relief of the leupold. Just get to a gun store and check out all the scopes you can. Your eyes might not like the same scopes mine do. Also worth a look are the zeiss conquest scopes. They perform better than anything else on the market in low light, hands down. My brother put one on his mark v 338-378 weatherby. His is the 6.5-20 target model with adjustable turrets. You can see in the field way after legal shooting hours (we tease him about his night vision scope). The adjustments are accurate. We’ve messed around with his setup to around 1000 yards. He has a laser rangefinder and we printed off a ballistics chart. Range it, look at the chart, adjust the scope, and smoke it. It really is that easy.
