If you like that Nikon so well, then simply buy another one for the new rifle. Nothing wrong with putting that scope on a rifle chambered for .308 Winchester.

I would think that the scope on your .300 would be fine on a .308.
4x for deer and 12x for those varmits. Leopold makes very good scopes should you decide to buy another.

Leupold is the best scope that money can buy.
I aslo agree with the guy that recommends a 3-9X variable. That should handle just about all of the shots you will be taking with a .308 Win. cartridge.

Leupold makes a fine optic for sure, but as far as best scope for the money you can not beat a Nikon Prostaff in 3-9×40. If you want a higher amount of magnification you will need to step up to the Buckmaster series.

The Leupold VX-1 and Leupold Rifleman are great cheaper scopes in the Leupold Scope family. By all means they’re not cheap quality scopes. They carry the same life time warranty as the higher end models of Leupold’s do. I have a Leupold Rifleman 3-9×40mm on my 22-250, its held up nicely since I bought it. I had a 7mm with a Leupold VX-1 3-9×40mm. The scope held zero nicely, even with the strong recoil of the 7mm.
I did have a Nikon Prostaff 3-9×40mm on my 22-250 at one time. The clarity of that scope is about the same, if not a little less clear then the Leupold Rifleman I have. But still a great scope that can hold zero, even on a 30-06.
If you want better clarity…Then I would go with the Leupold VX-II. It wont break your bank, but does cost a little more then the VX-1 and Rifleman. Also look at the VX-III…It cost more, but the clarity of the scope is awesome.
Rather it be the Nikon Prostaff, Leupold Rifleman, VX-1, VX-II, VX-III or higher end Nikon or Leupold scopes…You’re getting your moneys worth. and a great scope for your .308.
