You will want to go with the sightron. Try to get the 3-12×42 mm though. I dont like the adjustable objective bell on the 4-16×42, id rather have the magnification adjustment at the optic bell. Less movement to adjust so the game will not notice as easy. I think 3-9 might not be the power magnification you are looking for with a varminter. But Burris is not really that good for optics. They can be cloudy. and Zeiss is too much for what its worth.

You’re going to be very happy with that Burris EuroDiamond. Especially with the ballistiplex reticle. Burris is totally under appreciated by many american shooters/hunters. Go to the store and really look through the different manufacturers selections and look at the prices, etc. Burris makes good glass at better prices than the other guys. I have been very happy with my Burris and the ballistiplex reticle is right on once you get it sighted in. You won’t be sorry you got it.

I topped my Remington 700 VTR in .308 with a Nikon Buckmaster scope….. Its a 4-12×50MM….. With the remington scope rings it just about fits on to without the 50MM objective lens touching the top of the barrel. I did have to trim my aftermarket lens caps so it would fit on without jambing itself between the scope and barrel…… Its given me excellent results and its not too expensive either……

G’day mate i own 2 burris scope’s they are fantastic.+ they have a 14 pound spring where a lot of other scopes have a 7 pound spring.Burris also comes with a posi lock but you have to ask if it come with the one you are buying (but posi lock you don’t have to use it) and they use the same optic as the expensive model’s on the market +burris is steel on steel and the inner tube is larger than a lot of other scope’s.On a 308 me personally wouldn’t put a 50 mm objective lens on it, but it depends what you are using it for.For hunting in bushy ares i use a savage 308 3x 10x 40 burris scope and on my model 700 sps .223 varmint i use a 4x 16 x 44 burris scope but they all have a posi lock.Ill never get rid of these scopes.I would use a 4 x 16 x 44 on my 308 also, but I’m happy with the way i have them set up now.I will say i did drop my rifle once and it bounced off a little cliff it dropped and rolled about 12 meters down and it didn’t loose it’s zero.U.S.A have a good rifle scope don’t go past it.Im from Ausrtalia and i love yr scopes and yr girl’s .woops cheers mate

None of the others you listed are close in clarity to the Zeiss, but you would be stuck with a 3-9. For the $500 price range, if you need higher magnification, then I would highly recommend a Nikon Monarch in either a 4-12 or 5-20. Depending on how high you want your scope to sit, either in 42mm to 50mm bell versions are excellent choices.
I have owned many different high and low end scopes over the years and it is hard to beat a Monarch in that price range.

In your price range, you’ll want to avoid scopes that have a magnification range more that 3x : that is, a 4-12 will be OK, a 3-12 you can count on as having made too many compromises to get the extra stretch. My personal bias would be to go with the Leupold brand, even if your budget limits you to the VariX II line.

    Jonah,

IMNSHO, you can spend lots more money, but you just cannot buy a better scope than a Leupold.

The posters that said Burris arent wrong, and from my own expeience you would be doing yourself a disservice not loking at them or Nikons. Great scopes for a reasonable price. Leupold makes good scopes but dang most of em cost more than the gun id put em on.
